Abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) has a global and complex impact. One solution or innovation will not be suitable to every fishery type, gear type or location. Consequently, a range of solutions is needed to tackle this issue.
A webinar hosted by Innovate UK – UK Circular Plastics Network, DEFRA and the Commonwealth Secretariat saw over 200 delegates from 42 countries join to exchange insights and explore the challenges posed by ALDFG. The breadth of countries represented demonstrated the widespread nature of the problem, a problem that doesn’t recognise borders.
The webinar is part of a series designed for policymakers, industry professionals and academia seeking to foster collaboration. The speakers provided a wealth of knowledge
and expertise giving a high-level overview of the current state of ghost fishing gear globally. The event covered the economic and social implications of the Blue Economy, technical and innovative solutions, the role of the Global Plastics Treaty and existing legislation and featured video snapshots of some innovative projects and initiatives from across the globe.
