Global Research and Innovation in Plastics Sustainability is a conference, exhibition and showcase that was held on 15th – 17th March 2022 online. You can now watch back all the recordings – even if you hadn’t signed up to the event.

Innovate UK KTN & the UK Circular Plastics Network hosted Global Research & Innovation in Plastics Sustainability (GRIPS) 2022 on 15 – 17 March 2022 with over 2300 registered delegates, 50 exhibitors & 130 speakers. We saw former BBC Science Editor, David Shukman, speaking at the Plenary, thought-provoking conversation generated from the panel discussions, and competition winners for the “GRIPS Most Innovative” organisation in plastics sustainability.

We held 34 sessions over the three days, with around 1/3 of attendees coming from outside of the UK, with specific global sessions focused on Plastics Pacts in emerging economies where speakers from India, Kenya, Chile, Kenya, and South Africa spoke about the demand for innovation in their respective countries.

GRIPS had sponsored sessions from Mewburn Ellis LLP, Potter Clarkson, IBioIC, and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, with an overall theme of highlighting British and International activity which lead to plastics being less likely to reach landfill or incinerated in the environment, showcasing research & innovation from academia and industry that make plastics more sustainable. Sectors covered included plastic packaging, textiles, construction, legislation, agriculture, health, net zero, marine plastics, chemical recycling, amongst many others. The Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge ran sessions over the 3 days of the conference, raising awareness of the funding and innovation opportunities, as well as the funded cohort, while exhibitors came from all areas of plastics and sustainability, including WRAP and the British Plastics Federation, universities and start-ups with sustainable innovations. If you want a reminder of what took place, you can view the full programme here.

Paula Chin of WWF UK highlighting the issue of blanket plastics replacement in #Sustainability Carbon tunnel vision a problem, but is universal and will apply to all material classes.

The 3 R's do not include an arbitrary replace! Must be transparent and empirical.#GRIPS2022 pic.twitter.com/XQ3VCnHoYG

Fantastic discussion and questions in the session:

"Are we on target for 2025? Is the UK Plastic Pact a destination or a stepping stone?"

Definitely a journey, the work won't just stop!

Thanks to @UKCPNetwork speakers and others!#GRIPS2022
