Climate action NGO WRAP, working with the India Plastics Pact (managed by the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development), has announced that they are providing Godrej Consumer Products Limited, Huhtamaki India, and PepsiCo India a platform through the Pact initiative to lead five innovative projects focused on demonstrating recyclable solutions for flexible packaging.
Flexible plastics make up nearly 70% of all plastic packaging in India, with a large proportion of these being non-recyclable multi-layered plastics; it is extremely important to improve their recyclability to achieve a circular plastics economy for packaging.
The projects, supported by WRAP and Stewart Investors, will provide recyclable flexible packaging solutions across the food, home care, and personal care categories.
Seema Arora, Deputy Director General of the CII, said:
A key challenge for the FMCG industry in India is to create recyclable options for flexible plastic packaging. To support stakeholders’ transition to more recyclable structures, CII, through the India Plastics Pact Initiative, has selected projects from three Indian businesses to trial and scale solutions for recyclable flexible packaging. We are pleased to see stakeholders across the value chain take up this opportunity to make progress on achieving a circular plastics economy through innovation and collaborative action.
The India Plastics Pact is supported by UKRI’s Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK. In autumn 2020, the Challenge provided £250,000 of funding to enable WRAP to establish the Pact and develop the appropriate targets and priority work streams for India.
