Driving plastics packaging innovation
The power of innovation in sustainable plastics packaging was showcased at the Packaging Innovations Birmingham 2024 show recently by UKRI’s Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging (SSPP) Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK.
Innovation case studies
As well as having a presence at the show, the SSPP Challenge created a series of short downloadable case studies – ‘Driving plastics packaging innovation’. Grouped into four thematic areas – Reuse & Refill, Novel Materials, Films & Flexibles and Rigids & Food-grade, the case studies provide a snapshot of some of the projects funded since 2020 by the £60 million SSPP Challenge.

They include new technologies to tackle traditionally hard-to-recycle plastics, plant-based polymers that help to eliminate single-use plastics, reuse and refill solutions that are now being trialled on the high street, and food-grade recycling that closes the loop for food contact plastic packaging.
“Showcasing our portfolio of projects at this year’s Packaging Innovations exhibition was a great success. Visitors were drawn by the projects samples on the stand, including a smart refill and return kiosk, edible packaging film and the UK’s first plastic milk refill bottle. The show really helped to demonstrate how innovation funded by SSPP is helping to tackle some of the challenging areas of plastic packaging sustainability.”
