Challenging times call for novel ways of working, and the current situation means that virtual meetings and webinars are becoming the norm. While this limits face-to-face interactions and can make networking more difficult, the benefits can be huge given that this opens up such events to a much wider global audience. Lead of the UK Microplastics Network, Dr Alice Horton, has recently given two public webinars on some of the key questions and considerations surrounding microplastics research.
The first was a technical presentation hosted by PerkinElmer entitled ‘The Importance of Quality Control Standards to Produce Reliable Microplastic data: A Potable Water case study’. This webinar focussed especially on the optimum methods for microplastic analysis from environmental samples, and can be streamed on demand here.
The second webinar was a broader overview of microplastics research hosted by Ocean Plastic Webinars entitled ‘Microplastics: from source to sea’ aimed a wide international audience, which you can catch up on here.
Broadcasting these webinars online has led to the engagement of individuals and organisations from places as widespread as India, the Philippines and Costa Rica, to name a few, thus opening up discussions and opportunities that may not have otherwise been available. While we hope to be able to meet in person again in the not-too-distant future, the recent success of online meetings highlights that with virtual events we have the opportunity to reach wider audiences with a smaller carbon footprint.
