Valpak and Oakdene Hollins have been commissioned by the UKRI Innovate UK Transforming Foundation Industry challenge to undertake research aimed at developing foresight into what material requirements the UK packaging industry might have in the next 30 years.

You are invited to take part in research on 2050 Packaging Material Demand in the UK. The research is being conducted by Oakdene Hollins and Valpak for the UKRI Innovate UK Transforming Foundation Industry (TFI) challenge, and it aims to develop foresight into what material requirements the packaging industry might have in the next 30 years – in a long-term 2050 future.

The pressing need for the industry to become Net Zero and resource-efficient, coupled with innovation in business models and shift in consumer behaviour, will influence how the packaging industry will operate in the future. This includes changes in the demand for materials used in packaging, which could disrupt the operations of material suppliers – the foundation industry.

Surveys

We invite thought leaders and experts working across the packaging supply chain, including manufacturers, packer-fillers, product brands and retailers, to participate in this survey and help develop a foresight into the 2050 futures of packaging material demand. This will enable this project to:

–inform the packaging industry what is a list of future changes to watch out for. E.g., emergence of major regulations, innovation in material technologies and product design.

– inform UKRI Innovate UK what support the foundation industry may require, to meet the future packaging material demand. E.g., research and innovation needs, and foreseen market opportunities and threats.

Please click here to fill out the survey.

Event

The outputs of this research project will be presented and discussed at an industry event attended by key stakeholders in packaging supply chain and foundation industry, held on 24th March 2022. The event will be an opportunity for the industry to:

– gain insights into what the alternate 2050 future scenarios for packaging industry might look like

– participate in a cross-sector discussion on the challenges and opportunities the foundation industry might face in the alternate 2050 future scenarios
