About Nick

Nick is Deputy Director of the SSPP Challenge and has wide experience of embedding resource efficiency, circular economy and sustainability across Innovate UK’s strategy and funding competitions. Before SSPP, Nick led Innovate UK’s work in advanced materials and resource efficiency and also spent 15 years in industry working for Closed Loop Recycling, a large plastic bottle recycling business, during which time he managed a project to create the first commercial plastic bottle made from recovered marine plastic waste. He has a degree in Biochemistry from Imperial College and a Master’s in Oceanography from Southampton University.

Working alongside Paul on the overall management of the Challenge, Nick heads up SSPP’s team of Innovation Leads. He manages a number of projects across the portfolio, including a Large-scale Demonstrator project aimed at capturing and recycling plastic packaging currently lost to incineration or landfill. He has particular interest in and oversight of SSPP’s funding for bio-based and compostable alternatives to conventional plastics and food grade polyolefins.
